River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, and the quality road and rail connections.
