The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of approximately 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.
