An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its factories closed, even so it is still a successful and booming town today, largely due to its closeness to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail links.
