Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, yet it is still a successful and booming town today, mostly due to the closeness to the capital, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is located near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
