Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the commune that developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, producing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, as much of its production facilities went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, primarily because of its proximity to London, plus the exceptional rail and road links.

The town is set just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
