An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry went bust, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to the proximity to London, and the first rate road and rail communications.

The town stands beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
