The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that developed in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its manufacturing plants closed down, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, mainly because of its nearness to the city of london, and its excellent road and rail communications.

The town stands close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
