The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
