The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a populace of around 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the community which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous supposed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its factories closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, plus the exceptional rail and road links.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London.
