The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the village which developed round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless supposed witches.
