The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment which expanded around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its factories went bust, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road communications.
