Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of around 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the settlement which expanded around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a vital manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, largely because of its nearness to London, and the superb road and rail communications.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
