An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.
