Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.
