The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the encampment which evolved around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry closed, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the nearness to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.

The town can be found close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
