Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a vital manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into considerable decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industry closed, though it remains a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, and the good rail and road links.

The town is set near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital.
