Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.
