The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of roughly 32 miles from central London. The town has got a populace of around 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail connections.
