The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the village that expanded around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a considerable industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into substantial decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry closed, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail links.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
