The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the community which developed round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many supposed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to the nearness to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail links.

The town is located near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
