River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the village that evolved in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, making such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturers went bust, even so it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the capital, and its good rail and road links.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
