Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the 19th century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into significant decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industrial facilities went bust, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to London, and the excellent rail and road connections.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 km drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
