Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th century, making products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and its superb rail and road links.
