The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline during the 1980's, because much of its industries went bust, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its closeness to the capital, plus its terrific road and rail communications.
