Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, and the good road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
