The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry went bust, though it still is a successful and developing town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is situated just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
