The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of around 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th C, making such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through substantial decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed, in spite of this it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to the closeness to the capital, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is set close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
