The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many suspected witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industries shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus the quality rail and road communications.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
