The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were subsequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a significant industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its production facilities closed, nonetheless it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road links.

The town stands near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
