The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the town that developed around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a serious manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its plants closed down, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly because of its closeness to London, and the good rail and road links.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
