Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, and the excellent rail and road communications.

The town is found adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 kilometres from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
