Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the community that evolved around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered considerable decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industries shut down, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to London, and the terrific rail and road communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
