Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, producing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its production facilities shut down, in spite of this it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its proximity to London, and its superb road and rail communications.
