The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of approximately 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community which expanded round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a serious industrial town during the nineteenth century, making such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly because of its closeness to London, and its quality rail and road communications.
