An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless alleged witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industries closed down, though it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to London, plus its first rate road and rail communications.

The town lies beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
