The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, around 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its factories shut down, though it is still a successful and growing town today, mainly because of its nearness to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
