The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many assumed witches.
