The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, about 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of roughly 110,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the town which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, however it still is a successful and blooming town today, principally due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.

The town can be found beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
