The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, all the same it still is a thriving and expanding town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, plus the superb rail and road links.

Chelmsford lies just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
