An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry closed down, nevertheless it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its good road and rail links.

The town is positioned beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
