The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the commune which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a vital manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to its nearness to London, and the excellent rail and road links.

The town is located just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
