Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune which evolved around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, making items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industrial facilities closed down, yet it still is a thriving and expanding town today, principally due to its close proximity to London, and its good road and rail communications.

The town sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
