The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its production facilities went bust, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to London, and its good road and rail communications.
