The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the village which developed around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were later hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, largely due to its proximity to the city of london, and its terrific road and rail communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London.
