The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of some thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, plus the outstanding road and rail connections.
