The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the community which expanded around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th C, making such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its quality rail and road communications.

The town is positioned near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
