Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that developed surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were ultimately executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its quality rail and road communications.
