The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry shut down, although it is still a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the capital, and its excellent rail and road communications.

The town is situated near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
