Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the capital, and its good rail and road links.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
