It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the settlement which developed around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the 19th century, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and booming town today, primarily because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the good rail and road links.

Chelmsford is located adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
