Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the town that evolved surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to the capital, plus its quality road and rail links.

The town is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
