The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the village that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless alleged witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the superb road and rail communications.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
