The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the community that expanded round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry shut down, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to its nearness to London, and its excellent road and rail communications.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
