The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed down, although it continues to be a successful and growing town today, largely due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the excellent rail and road links.

The town is located just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
