River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous alleged witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industries closed, but it continues to be a successful and booming town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, and the quality rail and road connections.
