Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment which expanded around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industries closed down, though it remains a successful and booming town today, largely due to its nearness to the capital, plus the exceptional road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
