The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were ultimately executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.
