The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of about 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the community that evolved around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, mostly due to the closeness to London, plus the terrific rail and road links.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
