Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of around 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the commune that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry closed, in spite of this it still is a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to its proximity to the city of london, and the good rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London.
