Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.
