The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of about 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the settlement which expanded surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, making such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, largely because of its closeness to the capital, plus its good road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is located close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
