The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the community that expanded in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its production facilities shut down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the city of london, and the superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
