Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of some thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the village that developed around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it is still a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional rail and road links.

The town lies just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
