The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry closed, in spite of this it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, largely due to its closeness to the capital, and the first class road and rail communications.
