The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of about thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were consequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants shut down, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London.
