Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its manufacturers went bust, although it remains a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to its close proximity to London, plus its quality road and rail connections.

The town is located just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen mls from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
