The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the community that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless alleged witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town during the 19th century, producing such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it still is a successful and growing town today, principally due to its close proximity to the capital, and the excellent road and rail links.

The town is found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of the capital.
