The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of approximately thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that expanded surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry closed, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, plus the excellent road and rail links.

The town lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
