The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a significant manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.
