River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the encampment which developed round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th C, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed, although it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the capital, and the first class rail and road connections.

The town is set just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
