The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the community which grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail links.

The town stands close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
