Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the village which evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were later put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town during the 19th century, making such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry shut down, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its first class rail and road communications.

Chelmsford stands close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
