The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry closed, though it still is a successful and growing town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, and the first class rail and road links.

The town is located near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
