The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the village which grew up in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry closed, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, principally due to its nearness to London, and the superb road and rail communications.

The town lies near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
