Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were later executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its manufacturers closed down, though it still is a successful and developing town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its first rate rail and road communications.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
