Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of about thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants shut down, though it remains a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the capital, and the outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
