The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious industrial town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to its proximity to London, plus the first rate road and rail communications.
