Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless presumed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry went bust, even so it is still a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
