A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industrial facilities went bust, nonetheless it is still a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly due to the nearness to the capital, and its superb rail and road communications.
