River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village that expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its plants shut down, even so it still is a successful and booming town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, plus the superb road and rail communications.
