The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were thereafter hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industry went bust, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, mostly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its outstanding rail and road communications.

The town can be found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
