Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the commune that developed round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading agitators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part because of its closeness to London, and the excellent rail and road links.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
