Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, although it still is a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, and the exceptional road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
