Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its manufacturing plants closed down, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the city of london, and its first class road and rail communications.
