The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of about 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were ultimately put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the excellent rail and road communications.

The town stands near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
