The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the community which developed surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to London, and the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 km car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
