Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous alleged witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its proximity to London, and its quality road and rail links.

The town is positioned near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
