Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the town that evolved round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry closed down, even so it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, and the first rate rail and road connections.

The town sits close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
