Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it still is a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to the nearness to London, and its first rate road and rail links.
