Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of around 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many suspected witches.
