Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a serious industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the capital, plus its first class rail and road links.
