Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the community that expanded surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, and the outstanding road and rail connections.

The town can be found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
