The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, mostly due to its nearness to the capital, plus the terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
