Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous supposed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.
