The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 110,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the town which evolved surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its good rail and road communications.

The town is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
