Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize.
