River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the settlement that developed round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industries closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to the proximity to London, and the quality road and rail communications.

The town is found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
