Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a successful and booming town today, largely due to its closeness to the city of london, and the terrific rail and road connections.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 miles from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
