The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its factories closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, and the good road and rail links.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
