Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town which expanded in the area of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a considerable industrial town during the 19th Cent, making products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its production facilities closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, and the first class road and rail communications.
