The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the commune which expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a serious manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its factories went bust, even so it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its first class road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
