A Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a vital manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road links.

The town sits near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital.
