Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the village which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the capital, plus its excellent road and rail links.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
