The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of around 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.
