Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of about 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.
