The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that evolved surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, principally because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
