The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry went bust, nevertheless it remains a thriving and developing town today, for the most part due to the proximity to London, and the outstanding road and rail links.

Chelmsford is situated just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
