The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the encampment which developed in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline in the 1980's, since much of its manufacturers closed, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, mainly due to the close proximity to London, and the terrific road and rail connections.
