Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the town which grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were accordingly executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many assumed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry closed, in spite of this it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to its nearness to London, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.
