Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of around 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village which expanded round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were subsequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, but it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mostly because of its closeness to London, and the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 kilometres from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
