Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of approximately 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the community which expanded surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous supposed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, yet it continues to be a successful and developing town today, mostly because of its nearness to the capital, plus the superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
