The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of about thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its plants shut down, nonetheless it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part due to its closeness to London, and its terrific rail and road communications.
