Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the community which expanded round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, yet it remains a flourishing and booming town today, mainly due to the nearness to London, and the superb rail and road communications.

The town sits just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 km from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
