Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of around 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the town which grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, however it is still a thriving and developing town today, principally due to its nearness to London, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town sits near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
