It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th century, making such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the city of london, and its quality rail and road links.

The town is positioned close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
