Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part due to its nearness to London, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
