Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the community that developed around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its production facilities closed, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its nearness to London, and its superb road and rail communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
