The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, around thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the community which grew up in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mainly because of its close proximity to London, and its superb rail and road communications.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
