The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly 32 mls from central London. The town has got a populace of about 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the community that evolved in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless supposed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it still is a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and the first rate rail and road communications.

The town lies beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
