Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, making goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its manufacturing facilities shut down, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the proximity to London, plus the first rate rail and road connections.

The town lies near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
