A Saxon community superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into substantial decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry shut down, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, and the superb rail and road links.
