An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its plants ceased to be profitable, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, and its terrific rail and road communications.
