The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were consequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless alleged witches.
