The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the settlement that developed around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were accordingly executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, but it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to London, and its exceptional rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
