River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus its superb road and rail links.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London.
