An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry went bust, in spite of this it is still a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its nearness to London, and its terrific road and rail communications.
