The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the community which expanded round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous assumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its factories shut down, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to London, plus the superb road and rail communications.

The town is set near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
