Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the commune which grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were thereafter hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, crafting products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, but it remains a successful and booming town today, largely due to its closeness to London, plus the first class road and rail links.

The town is set beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
