The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, making such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to the proximity to the capital, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
