An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry went bust, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, and its good road and rail communications.

The town is set near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
